The Cheboygan County Community Foundation (CCCF), in collaboration with the City of Cheboygan, is spearheading a significant restoration project to preserve and enhance one of the community’s most iconic landmarks, the Crib Light at the mouth of the Cheboygan River.

The Crib Light has long served as a welcoming symbol at the entrance to Cheboygan County, guiding boaters and greeting visitors as they enter the harbor. Recognizing both its historic significance and its role in tourism and community pride, CCCF and the City of Cheboygan have launched a comprehensive improvement project to restore the structure and ensure its longevity for generations to come.

Improvements completed to date include fresh exterior paint and the installation of new windows, enhancing both the appearance and structural integrity of the light. These early updates represent the first phase of a larger restoration plan.

The full project is slated to be a $350,000 investment in the community. To date, the Cheboygan County Community Foundation has granted $50,000 toward the project, made possible through generous donations given specifically to support this effort.

“This project is a perfect example of how community partnerships and philanthropy come together to preserve our heritage and strengthen our future,” said John Wheaton, Executive Director. “When people see the Crib Light, they immediately think of Cheboygan. More than a structure, it has become a symbol of who we are and the pride we take in our community.”

As restoration efforts continue, CCCF and the City of Cheboygan will work collaboratively to complete additional structural and aesthetic improvements, ensuring the Crib Light remains a safe, beautiful, and enduring landmark on Cheboygan’s waterfront.

The Cheboygan County Community Foundation remains committed to investing in projects that preserve local history, enhance tourism, and improve quality of life across the county.
